Google Lens is so magical you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.Īnother place you'll see AI in action is the new "Now Playing" feature, which uses on-device - no audio is sent to the cloud - machine learning to listen to and identify an ambient song and display it on the lock screen. But those misses were rare and things will get better over time. Sometimes it incorrectly scanned the number six as an eight and other times it was completely wrong on the text detection. Like Google Assistant, it's still early days for Lens and it doesn't always get things right. Lens is incredibly powerful and once you use it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. It's too bad Google took a step back with the power button it's no longer textured and I often found myself accidentally pressing the volume up button. Google's shrunken the glass panel on the rear and coated the aluminum body with a matte finish that gives the phones some much-needed grippiness. The good news is, the Pixel 2's are a lot prettier, at least on the back. In my opinion, the wedge-shaped metal phones looked awfully generic and the glass panel on the back was ugly. If you read my review of the original Pixels, you'd know I wasn't a big fan of the industrial design. Google sent us the *eye roll* "Just Black" version to test, but I have a feeling the black-and-white model with orange-colored power button Pixel 2 XL and the "Kinda Blue" Pixel 2 are going to be hits. The colors they're offered in are snazzy, too. They're just not Samsung or Apple's best.īut if we compare the Pixel 2's to the Note 8 and iPhone X (and why wouldn't we?), they're just a much better value. The Pixel 2 and 2 XL have similar pricing to the Galaxy S8/S8+ and iPhone 8/8 Plus.

The Pixel 2's also comes in 128GB versions, but that'll cost you extra.īut that's also not an entirely fair comparison.
NOTE VERSION OF GOOGLE PIXEL 2 XL ANDROID
Google's latest Android phones - starting at $650 for the Pixel 2 and $850 for the Pixel 2 XL - look downright affordable compared to the $950 Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and upcoming $1,000 iPhone X. iPhone 8, iPhone X, and Samsung Galaxy S8 They may not be the prettiest or most feature-packed phones, but damn it if they're not just the kind of competitive flagship phones the world needs now that companies are charging $1,000 (or more) for the latest and greatest glass slabs. In fact, Google's new Pixel 2 and 2 XL come out with guns blazing.

The Pixels are here for the long, long haul. But don't think for a second that Google's tossing in the the towel anytime soon. The tech giant's first premium phones were good phones that fell short of challenging Samsung and Apple's dominance. It's not easy to admit, but outside of tech nerd circles, nobody really cared about them.

By all accounts, Google's Pixel and Pixel XL were failures.
